Abstract

An examination of the role played by the Wesleyan Hugh Price Hughes, a leading representative of English Nonconformism, in shaping public opinion against Parnell's continued leadership of the Irish Parliamentary Party. Working from Hughes's speeches, sermons, and articles in the Methodist Times, the writer shows that the “Nonconformist Conscience” articulated by Hughes motivated both his continuous support of Home Rule for Ireland and his disappointment in Parnell.
