Abstract

The current research was conducted during October 2020 to September 2021 in bay waters of Sonmiani, Balochistan as aimed to fill the paucity of diversity and distribution of research for the bay waters. Monthly fish samples were collected using gill net and beach seine during high and low tide. In the present study, out of nine species, the six species were identified as a new report species belongs to Leiognathidae family. Secutor interruptus (N=132) was the most abundant species whereas the least abundant species collected during the study period was Karalla daura (N=1). Highest diversity (1.37) was estimated during the pre-monsoon and post monsoon season while the high abundance of species such as Nuchequula blochii, Aurigequula fasciata, Photopectoralis aureus, Nuchequula gerreoides and Photopectoralis bindus were observed in pre-monsoon season, while the minimum number of species were collected during the Northeast monsoon. The fish condition estimated by Fulton condition factor (k) values (0.85 to 1.98) showed that fish species had good growth conditions in the lagoon environment. This current study shows promising results for estimating the diversity and seasonal abundance of these Ponyfishes, moreover, they are crucial for fisheries management for enabling targeted action plans and giving concise solutions to minimize overfishing, thus, helping in long term sustainable conservation.
