Description

The photograph is of Charles Foster Willard at the controls of a Curtiss aircraft and Jacob Earl Fickel sitting beside him holding a .30-caliber Springfield rifle at the Harvard-Boston Aero Meet which was held in Atlantic, Massachusetts from September 3-13, 1910 and was sponsored by the Harvard Aeronautical Society. At the time of the photograph Jacob Fickel was a Lieutenant with the United States Army and is credited with firing the first shot from an airplane. The photograph shows Fickel demonstrating how he fired the first shot from an airplane.
