The golden years are not so golden for some older women who experience intimate partner violence. Often the relationship has been abusive for years, for some the abuse began with a physical or mental health status change, for others the relationship may be a new relationship following a divorce or widowhood. Older women were forgotten by both the domestic violence and aging support agencies, until the combined efforts of the American Association of Retired Persons, advocates concerned about the welfare of older domestic violence victims, sociologists and a handful of researchers around the world created awareness and services for older abused women in a number of communities. Providing services for this population requires consistent coordination between the aging and domestic violence agencies. This partnership is not typical but, with nurturing, has occurred. The large number of aging baby boomers will bring about a substantial demand for these services. It is imperative to secure resources so that abuse of older women can be addressed proactively.
