Abstract

This study aims to establish haematological, biochemical parameters of healthy Kundhi buffalo calves from different areas of Hyderabad, Pakistan, under field conditions. The study was conducted on one hundred twenty (120) buffalo calves of both sexes, ranging in age from 03 to 12 months were chosen at random and divided into three age groups: 03-06 months, 07-09 months and10-12 months with both males and females represented in each group. Female calves from 07-09 months had the highest levels of hematological parameters such as hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume, white blood cell count, red blood cell count and platelets count, where as in female calves age ranges from 10-12 months, the lowest values of haematology were observed. ESR showed the opposite observation with older females calves 10-12 months recording the highest ESR rate. Biochemical parameters also varied significantly. Glucose concentration were higher in males across all ages, while total protein, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL were highest in females aged  07-09 months and lowest in females aged 10-12 months. On the other hand, calves that were age-related between 10 to 12 month declines in physiological parameters, such as body temperature, respiration rate, pulse rate and heart rate, suggested physiological stabilization and adaptation as the animals grew older. Age and sex have a significant impact on the physiological and metabolic status of Kundhi buffalo calves. Present study offers useful reference data for clinical evaluation, health tracking and nutritional management of this native breed.
