MS-192: Andrew S. Iddings Wright Brothers Homecoming Celebration Collection

Description

The image shows the birch bark canoe float in the parade through Dayton, Ohio during the 1909 Wright Brothers Homecoming Celebration. Ahead of the float is a herald on horseback with a sign that reads "Indian Canoe". The photograph was shot on Main Street in the Court of Honor looking south toward Third Street. This float was part of the history of locomotion in America section of the parade which featured floats representing various modes of transportation. This section of the parade started with the birch bark canoe and ended with a model of the Wright Flyer. In the background are other floats and the crowd who lined the streets to watch the parade. The tall building in the center of the image is Green, Green and Co. Bakery at 136 North Main Street. The next building to the right is W. N. Artz Furniture store at 110 and 112 North Main Street followed by the Callahan Bank Building located at the northeast corner of Third Street and Main Street, with the large clock tower. Next is the Conover Building located at the southeast corner of Third Street and Main Street followed by the United Brethren Building, located at the northeast corner of Main Street and Fourth Street. Both the Conover Building and the United Brethren Building have spot lights on the top of their roofs that were used during the nighttime festivities of the two day event. All of the floats for the parade were sculpted by Joseph Horchert and designed by Henry Kabierske. Kabierske, of Fischer and Sons in Philadelphia, also designed most of the decorations for the event.
