The photograph is of Thomas Sopwith flying a Wright Model A Flyer at the Harvard-Boston Aero Meet which was held in Atlantic, Massachusetts from August 26 through September 4, 1911 and was sponsored by the Harvard Aeronautical Society and the Boston Daily Globe. The image shows Sopwith flying over the launching of the battleship Rivadavia from the Fore River Ship Yards while spectators watch from a hill overlooking the scene. The Rivadavia was the largest battleship of its kind at the time of the launch and was built in the United States for Argentina. In the background are ships and spectators watching from the water.
