Description

A glass plate stereoview slide with handwritten label Tranchee Des Baionettes, 25529, Verdun (The trench Baionneties, 25529, Verdun). A view of the Trench of Bayonets. The memorial is in honor of two battalions of the French 137th Infantry Regiment who were buried alive in the trench. When the trench was discovered, all that remained visible were a number of bayonets sticking up from the ground. Bayonets and wooden cross grave markers are visible in the image. The photograph was taken between July 28, 1914 and November 11, 1918 in France during World War I.
