Abstract

This article discusses the law passed by French legislators on February 10, 2004, that bans conspicuous signs of religion in public schools, specifically targeting the hijab. The author details the political and social arena in France previous to, and during the passage of the law, the connotations of the law regarding religion and education, as well as the consequences of the law.
