Description
A Dayton Fire Department steam pumper fire engine is being pulled by three horses as it races north on Main Street in the exhibition fire run during the 1909 Wright Brothers Homecoming Celebration. Four firefighters ride on the engine as black smoke billows from its top. The engine was from company two which was located at Webster Street and Ford Street. The engine is an American LaFrance 1300 g.p.m. double extra piston engine and cost $5,400.00 new. The image shows the exhibition fire run that the Fire Department performed from Sixth Street north on Main Street to the Soldier's Monument. Spectators can be seen on the side of the street, as well as, decorations for the Court of Honor which was located on Main Street between Third Street and the Soldier's Monument. Soldiers with the Second and Third Regiments of the Ohio National Guard stand along the side of the street waiting for the review which followed the exhibition fire run. Signs are visible for Geo. C. Hershey Law Offices at 14 North Main Street, Adolph Grossman Photography and Montgomery County Mutual Insurance Company at 12 North Main Street, Francis M. Thompson Law Offices at room 10, 12 North Main Street, E. Grant Koontz Real Estate Offices at 14 North Main Street, and the J. S. Horner Piano Store at 10 North Main Street.
