Description

Earl Surrite, a World War II veteran, poses at his station as waist gunner in a vintage B-17 for a story about him in the Dayton Daily News. Him and his surviving crewmates were given special permission by the Air Force Museum to enter the plane an hour before the museum opened. Earl was one of the waist gunners on a B-17 bomber that was shot down in WW II. Each gunner had a .50 caliber machine gun placed midway in the fuselage on both sides of the aircraft. Surrite and 5 members of his crew met for the first time since the war at the Air Force Museum. The six men became POW's after they crash landed.
