Abstract

The United States has the greatest health care system in the world, by some estimates. We have the best technology, the best equipment, and the most highly respected hospitals. Yet there is great dissatisfaction with the health care system in the United States. Fifty-six percent of Americans believe the health care system needs "a complete overhaul" and another 29% want to see "major changes."1 It is considered too expensive, and too many people are currently without insurance, which means that they are often without health care,2more often admitted for avoidable conditions,3 and have mortality rates about twice as high as those with insurance.4
