Abstract
A calculus of plausibility is constructed from the Dempster-Shafer plausibility function representation of support, Dempster's rule and the theory of r-norms. The semantics of plausibility are then compared with the semantics of possibility. It is shown that there is no transformation from plausibility to possibility that preserves the fundamental properties of the two approximate reasoning methodologies.
