Abstract
Non-normalevents,inparticularsystemfailureswithseriousoperationalimpact arerareinflightoperations.Theseeventsarenotalwayseasytohandle by flight crews.Theaimoftheperformedstudyisto determine whereinthisprocess potential issuesmaylie.Tenincidentreportsarestudied using a newly developed operationalissueanalysisframework.Theframeworkisusedtodetermine whetherandhowthecurrentinterfacescommunicatetheinitialfunctionalimpact andfunctionalimpactdelayedintime.Additionally, resultsfrompilotinterviews arepresentedwhichidentifiedthreephasesofnon-normaleventhandling:fault detection,faultmanagementandstrategic planning. Analysisofthetencases showsthatcurrentalertsystemsaremainly supporting thefirsttwophaseswhile thestrategic planning phase, requiring higherlevelfunctionalinformation integratedintotheoperationalcontextaswellasfailureimpactlaterintime,is relyingalmostentirelyonpilot knowledge andreasoning.
