Champaign County's earliest records of naturalization are found in the Minute Books of the Clerk of Common Pleas Court spanning the years 1820-1859. Some naturalizations are found in the Clerk of Courts, District Court Minutes, for the years 1852-1880.

From 1860-1906, naturalizations were issued by the Champaign County Probate Court. By 1906 the naturalization process was centralized having been taken over by the federal government under the jurisdiction The Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization.
