Abstract
Psychiatric/Mental Health nursing contains many challenges and rewards. While some of the challenges are obvious and well documented, the rewards are more often implicit and occasionally invisible (Michael, 1994) Indeed, no doubt many of you will have been asked, as I have, “Why do you do it?” For members of the public the emotional recompense for general nurses is understandable and apparent; this is certainly not the case with P/MH nursing.
