Abstract
Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is a unique field that combines the most basic aspects of preventive medicine, the surgical specialty of gynecology, and the distinctive medical/ surgical specialty of obstetrics. The obvious common denominator in these distinct disciplines is the healthcare of women. In the fee-for-service environment of the last half of the 20th century, OB-GYN has evolved into a field of limited preventive and primary care, with a primary emphasis on female pelvic surgery and obstetrics.
