Abstract

This chapter addresses the prevalence and consequences of abuse, policy, and practice issues, including the basic questions of why men hit and why women stay, and provides social workers, advocates, and other health and human services workers with a framework for understanding domestic violence so that the differences and commonalities highlighted within each chapter have greater clarity and clearer context. As readers learn about the different issues that may be unique to persons in various "categories" it is important to understand that, even within these categories, not all women's situations are the same.
