Bio
Damaris E. Serrano G., Panama, Republic of Panama, holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic cultural studies, a Master of Comparative Literature from Michigan State University, and the Gill-Chin Lim Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in Global Studies, 2006. She studied in Spain with a grant from the Iberian American Cooperation Institute and was awarded the Grant for Hispanists by the Spanish Department of Foreign Affairs in 1996. While at MSU she became the lead consultant for La Casa, the first Spanish writing center in the Midwest (2002–04). She has received five times the most prestigious national awards in the Republic of Panama (2000, two in 2002, 2005, 2013): the Signos Literary Award and The Ricardo Miró National Award in the categories of Literary and Sociological Essay.
Serrano’s major publications are all awarded books, articles, and international conference presentations in Central America. She is a researcher for the encyclopedia Towards a History of Central American Literatures and author for the Dictionary of Central American Literatures (2001, 2008). An international member of Ístmica and founding editor of La Pluma entre dos mundos (the student academic journal at ML), she has been a professor for 35 years in Panama and in the U.S.
