Abstract
This paper explores the parametrically excited behavior of U.S. passenger and freight vehicles on tangent track due to harmonic variations in conicity. Floquet theory is used to find the stability boundaries of these vehicles. Results show that principal parametric resonance occurs at excitation wavelengths that are half the kinematic wavelengths of the vehicles. These can lead to significant reductions in critical speeds.
